African elephants are the largest land mammals on earth…and they’re vegetarians! They rarely sleep, mostly roaming over long distances foraging (an adults eats about 300 lbs of food a day). Elephant gestation is 22 months, meaning that female elephants are pregnant for almost two years! Elephants have been victims of violence due to the illegal poaching of their ivory tusks. These giants are also known for their memory, complex social relationships, their reverence for matriarchy, and playful sense of humor.
